The Cross Outside the Church

SM

This picture works because of the lighting on the cross which stands out more because it appears to be artificial lighting and the warm colouring contrats nicely with the cooler natural lighting.  The out of focus foreground grave stone is a little distracting and perhaps a wider lens setting or the photographer shifting position could have eliminated it. Having said that the rest of the composition is nicely arranged.

The Little Red Car

There is a real sense of speed and movement captured in this image from the nice panning to the blurred wheels and the use of the diagonal composition. The contrast and colouring does need to be turned down a tad as there are some very bright distracting highlights. Lowering the contrast might have enabled the driver to be lightened too. A very nice action shot nevertheless.

Vintage at it's Best

SM

The title of this image says it all really. The elements here come together to create a timeless image. The contrast and colouring gives this image the same feel as a film transparency. Everything is sharp and punchy but there are some blocked up shadows which is a slight shame. I could imagine this reproduced in a classic car magazine.

Aylesford Bridge

This is a great location and this is a nicely detailed image of it. The cloud detail is very good and really adds to the scene. There is not any directional lighting on the buildings though which are outshone by the bright water in the foreground. I would have cropped this down and the left side of the image to concentrate our attention on the ancient bridge and town itself. Well done on avoiding any obvious modernity and creating another virtually timeless scene.

The Forager

This is well seen and well captured, the timing is excellent. Capturing an animal like this doing something other than standing still is good. It is a shame that the lighting has illuminated the antler and not the face but that is a minor point.

Aylesford

This is another fine view of Aylesford. This one is from a slightly different viewpoint which is very attractive. The evening conditions have worked very well and I like the excellent lighting on the trees. It is a shame that once again the buildings did not benefit from the same lighting. Nevertheless, the composition with the foreground leaves adds a nice sense of depth.

HMS Gannet

3rd

I have seen many images of the 3/4 view of this ship and I have taken a few myself but I do not recall seeing this angle taken before which works very well. I am also impressed by the retention of detail throughout the contrast range. My only real criticism is the tight crop on the right hand side. Otherwise this is great.

Sunset Truckin'

I like the idea here and the well timed shot. The sunset is excellent and the truck is nicely placed. The problem is that this is a small part of the image. A different composition or some creative cropping could really enhance this image. Either way as I said I like the idea here and the resulting image is certainly striking.

Professional Wheelie

The motorbike and rider detail here is great with a nice hint of movement. The focussing is spot on too. The background detail is soft which is good but I think I may have gone for a wider aperture to diffuse it more. My main concern is that the image appears a little dark. I think lifting the brightness would be a good idea. Having the subject off centre was also a good move.

Aldeburgh Beach

2nd

This is a great exercise in controlling light both in the exposure and in the final image. The light in the sky from the warm tones to the cool blues is wonderfully controlled with no burnt out areas. This brightness could easily cause the shadow detail to block up, but no, shadow detail has been captured and presented in the final image. Excellent.

1st

This is a very bold image where the exposure and lighting has lost the highlights on the left side completely whilst retaining the shadow detail. This could be seen as a mistake but instead it has been cleverly utilised to emphasise the fantastic eyes, especially the eye in the highlight area. In fact the other eye is just as compelling. Very different and very good indeed.

Mezzanine floor, No 3 Slip Cover Chatham Historic Dockyard

I have seen this floor at the Chatham Historic Dockyard and it was well worth climbing up to see it. Exposure can be tricky with dark areas and the roof skylights creating big contrast. The photographer here has produced a great composition with leading lines creating great depth and in addition they appear to have added an effect to give the image a graphic feel. The image is well constructed but it feels very empty, perhaps it needs another feature or a figure somewhere? Well done on finding a solution to the exposure issues.

Bollard and Old Rope

This image just shouts texture and age. It is a simple composition with well controlled depth of field. The background is completely thrown out of focus. The contrast is a little high and the background is very bright. Well seen and something different.

Through the Gap

Again, I like the idea here but the view through the gap is alittle uninspiring as the subject is too far away. I think a vessel of some kind, especially something unique such as a tall ship or Thames barge etc would have worked very well here. The lighting is very good so the photographer chose some great conditions to photograph in.
